“Taking a look beyond leadership competencies: What else makes leaders excellent?”
Abstract:
With the turn of the century, there has been a paradigmatic shift in the field of leadership studies. In the private sector, a large number of corporate scandals that peaked with the Wall Street crash of 2008 and its consequent “great recession”, and more recently the Volkswagen case, has shown that a focusing only on a narrow profit-goals oriented approach to executive leadership is not sustainable, and paradoxically has severe consequences on organizational profits and long term share value. As a result, both theory and practice have turned to traditional notions of excellence and virtue in both philosophy and other newer related disciplines such as psychology to elaborate new, positive forms of leadership. Such excellent leadership not only enables organizations to grow and create wealth, but to do so in a way that is organic and veritable, and thus sustainable. In this context, several business schools are now moving beyond from training competent executives, towards developing excellent leaders. As a result, a growing number of management and leadership scholars are now concerned with elevating both leader character and commitment alongside competence as the three pillars in which excellent leadership stands. The present seminar will show the theoretical framework that grounds excellent leadership, and some preliminary findings that support its theoretical propositions.”
