“Student Activism and Responses to Racism”
The United States of America has seen a surge in student activism focused on race. Students are walking out of classes and staging protests to draw attention to prejudice on campus. They are demanding administrators’ resignations, greater faculty diversity, public apologies, cultural centers, and new courses that address social justice and historical inequities. In this presentation, participants will get first hand accounts of the salient issues raised by today’s students, explore their concerns, and examine how schools are responding to grievances. Movements explored include Black Lives Matter, DREAMers, Standing with Standing Rock, the Muslim Student Association and Asian Pacific Islander Student Movement.
