Agustín Carstens donates Economics Prize to support young Mexicans in International Economics Olympiad

Dr. Agustín Carstens has donated for the second year the resources of the King of Spain Economics Award to ITAM, to support young students in representing Mexico in the International Economics Olympiad. This year, the competition will be held in Hong Kong. 

The mexican delegation is made up of high school students Viktor Chargoy Espino, Eduardo Iván Martínez Hernández, Maribel Romero Rodríguez, Mauricio Sebastián Salinas Sánchez and Rodrigo Hernández de la Cruz. These talented young people have been selected to represent Mexico thanks to their outstanding participation in the Mexican Economics Olympiad.

Agustin Carstens’ generosity boosts young talents in the International Economics Olympiad

Dr. Carstens, alumnus of the Economics Undergraduate Program at ITAM, was honored with the King of Spain Economics Award last March 6th of 2023, in acknowledgement of his relevance and influence in the Iberoamerican political economy. Inspired by his compromise with economical and financial education, he decided to donate the resources of the prize to ITAM with the objective of fomenting these activities among mexican youth.

Agustín Carstens is an renowned economist with a Masters and a Doctorate in Economics by the University of Chicago. Currently, he serves as general manager of the Bank for International Settlements. During his career in the public sector, he has held important positions such as Secretary of Finance and Public Credit and Governor of Banco de México. He was also awarded the Carrera al Universo award from ITAM.

Dr. Carstens' donation has been fundamental in supporting the selected students, allowing them to prepare and participate in the International Economics Olympiad. Since March 2023, the medalists of the International Economics Olympiad have participated in preparation sessions held by ITAM professors and students. These sessions have covered topics like the operation of the markets, game theory, monetary politics and corporate finances. 

The International Economics Olympiad organization, the academic preparation and the economic support to the Mexican representatives reflect ITAM’s compromise with the development of economic and financial education in Mexico.
