We congratulate Ricardo Sabatés Ayala, former Economics student, 1996, for being appointed Professor of Education and International Development of the Education Department at the University of Cambridge, England.

Ricardo Sabatés also has a Ph.D. in Development Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, United States. Dr. Sabatés began his postdoctoral studies in the area of education and development in 2002, when he was a student at the Institute of Education, University of London. In 2008, as part of the University of Sussex, he continued his research in the field of equity in education, primarily in Africa. In 2015, he joined the University of Cambridge as a Reader in Education and a member of the Research in Equitable Access and Learning (REAL Centre) and the Cambridge Network of Disability and Education Research (CaNDER). Dr. Sabatés Aysa is an executive member of Hughes Hall, Cambridge, and the British Association of International and Comparative Education (BAICE).

His research focuses on the area of the social benefits of education, as well as on equity in access to education and learning. His work is primarily quantitative, using the contextualization of concepts and the application of econometric models to understand aspects in education that are important for marginal communities. Dr. Sabatés Aysa has collaborated with researchers from various countries where he has focused his work.

Regarding his training at ITAM, Dr. Ricardo Sabatés said, “ITAM gave me training as an economist, which helps me understand development from the economic point of view, and technical training that I take advantage of to conduct my research. The most important thing is to maintain a critical analysis of the social problems that we face and to be open to different approaches in promoting equitable solutions in the field of education and international development.”
