Richard Stallman is famous for creating the “Free Software” movement. He is an American programmer, creator of the GNU operating system and the ethical, political, legal ideas associated with it. During his speech at ITAM, he analyzed the behavior of current operating systems as well as their applications, developed by international companies He stated that most devices restrict users’ freedom not only by limiting their use of the device, but also by preventing technological contributions of talented individuals. Furthermore, he mentioned how big corporations use both hardware and software to gather their clients’ information and may even alter that information stored in the machines.
Stallman also stressed that the distinction between free software and open source lies in the ideology behind the movement, which in the latter case is often hidden from users. He then invited the audience to broaden their knowledge on this topic so that they could discuss and share it with their colleagues. Moreover, he mentioned how important it is to develop programming skills, a source of valuable tools and professional opportunities. Finally, he suggested that the students should start writing code intensely, in order to master one programming language and then focus on tweaking, exercising thus the ability to properly write code changes in big pieces of software.
