Dr. Agustín Carstens named chairman of International Monetary and Financial Committee

Congratulations to ITAM alumnus Dr. Agustín Carstens, current governor of the Bank of Mexico, for his appointment on Feb. 20 as chairman of the International Monetary and Financial Committee of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He will serve for a term of three years, effective March 23, 2015.
 
Carstens was deputy minister of finance from 2000 to 2003. He served as deputy managing director of the IMF from August 2003 to October 2006, and he chaired the IMF and World Bank Joint Development Committee from March 2007 to October 2009. From 2006 to 2009 he was Mexico’s finance minister, and he has been governor of the Bank of Mexico since January 2010.
 
Currently, Carstens is on the board of directors of the Bank for International Settlements, where he chairs the Global Economy Meeting of central bank governors and the Economic Consultative Committee, and he is a
member of the Financial Stability Board’s steering committee. Carstens has a master’s and a doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in economics from ITAM.
