Abstract

The number of contributions about transdisciplinarity has increased substantially during the last decade. Therefore it is not wholly surprising that the disciplinary and professional backgrounds of contributors, as well as their geographical distribution, are now broader than in 2004. However, it is not unfair to claim that transdisciplinarity is still not main-stream. Today, it is rarely taught in higher education programs, it is still not widely recognized by professional institutions, and it is not often supported by funders of research. Indeed for many, transdisciplinary contributions are in contradiction with the basic principles of conventional scientific knowledge production. This presentation will briefly highlight the achievements of transdisciplinary contributions in both higher education and research on sustainable development during the last decade. It shows that there have been both theoretical and methodological advances that merit recognition. For example, stakeholders are no longer simply the receivers of project results but treated as partners in Local Agenda 21 who may influence transdisciplinary processes, especially the pertinence of research questions, the relevance of policy formulation and the feasibility of practical outcomes. It will also present the shortcomings of these kinds of contributions, including the dominance of academics and their limited capacity to influence societal change. Finally, some topics that could be addressed in the post-2015 Agenda on sustainability will be proposed for debate.
