After Ayotzinapa: A Roundtable on Violence, Protest and Democracy in Mexico

In "After Ayotzinapa: A Roundtable on Violence, Protest and Democracy in Mexico" the speakers will explain what happened on September 26th in Iguala (Mexico), when 43 students from the escuela normal in Ayotzinapa were abducted by the municipal police, in order to have a better understanding of the role of government authorities, political parties, civil society and organized crime groups in Mexico, and what are the political and social implications and perspectives for the country’s democratic system.
 
This event is organized by Latin American focused Master of Pacific International Affairs students, with the support of the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies and the IR/PS Latin American Student Association (LASO).

Speakers:
Gema Santamaria
Topic: New forms of violence, by state and non-state actors 
Gema is a Ph.D. candidate in sociology and historical studies at the New School for Social Research, specializing in violence, crime and vigilantism in Mexico and Central America. She holds an undergraduate degree in international relations from Mexico’s Autonomous Institute of Technology. She served as the main advisor for the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Report for Latin America 2013 - 2014, “Citizen Security with a Human Face: Evidence and proposals for Latin America.”
 
Ana Isabel Garcia
Topic: Opportunities and challenges for civil society and social movements
Ana Garcia’s expertise is on comparative politics, with an emphasis on Latin America. She holds an undergraduate degree in international relations from Mexico’s Autonomous Institute of Technology (2006), a master’s degree in Latin American studies from St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford (2009), and a Ph.D. in politics (comparative government) from Nuffield College, Oxford (2013).
 
Verónica Hoyo
Topic: The role of the national and international media
Verónica holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). She She holds undergraduate degrees in Political Science and international relations from Mexico’s Autonomous Institute of Technology. Her research focuses on the role of outsider political parties, their strategies and the nature of voter preferences in contemporary democracies. She is particularly interested in analyzing the choice and timing of the politicization of social cleavages (such as immigration, environmentalism, etc.) and their introduction into the issue agenda by radical, political entrepreneurs. Her other research interests include electoral institutions, political behavior, nationalism and identity politics.
 
Victor Remigio Martinez Cantu
Topic: The relationship between political parties and organized crime groups, towards 2015 electoral process
Victor has a master’s degree in public policy from the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico (ITAM) and a specialty in United States studies from the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies Summer Seminar series. He is currently a professor of economics at Tec de Monterrey’s Campus Sonora Norte, and has worked with different public agencies on matters of public safety, international relations and immigration.
 
Carlos Vilalta
Carlos Vilalta is professor of research methods and coordinator of the Information Bank for Applied Research in Social Sciences (BIIACS) at the Centro de Investigacion y Docencia Economicas (CIDE) in Mexico City. Earlier this year, Vilalta presented results of a test of two macro-theories in criminology, outlining several important findings. The results were based on a Mexico City case study and appear on CIDE’s Geocrimen website.
 
Alfonso Hernandez-Valdez
Alfonso Hernandez-Valdez has been a research professor at ITESO's Department of Sociopolitical Studies since 1998 (Guadalajara, Mexico). He teaches and conducts original research on the consolidation of democracy in Mexico.
