The School of Information Science at Claremont Graduate University (CGU) is located in the beautiful city of Claremont, a suburb of Los Angeles in Southern California. We offer Master and PhD programs in Information Systems and over the past 14 years, we have graduated the most PhDs in Management of Information Systems of any school in the world.
The School of Information Science prepares students for careers as systems analysts and database administrators, computer and information systems managers, computer software engineers, and systems administrators.
The downturn in the information technology job market is a temporary phenomenon. A recent article in the Los Angeles Times (July 20, 2004) talks about the lack of interest by students in majoring in IT fields, but notes that there has been a recent growth in information technology jobs, including IBM and HP creating nearly 10,000 new jobs this year.
Off-shore outsourcing, a hot item in the news these days actually provides more opportunities than disincentives for choosing a career in IT. With outsourcing comes new demands for social and technological solutions to service-oriented architectures (SOAs). According to John Seely Brown, former Chief Scientist at Xerox and CGU honorary doctor of humane letters, today’s organizations must develop rigorous and effective methods for working together if they expect to benefit from phenomena such as off-shore outsourcing. Designing effective SOAs requires knowledge that is gained in the masters and doctoral curriculum, which emphasizes a mixture of technical and managerial education.
